3. Born into a family of mathematicians, Astronomer Anders Celcius was a professor at the University of Uppsala. He didn't live very long, but he packed a lot into that time.

4. Sir Arthur Eddington, who was a pioneer investigator into the internal structure of stars. Eddington was one of the first people to understand Einstein's theory of general relativity, and was able to present to the English-speaking community. He was later praised by Einstein for presenting 'the finest presentation of the subject in any language'.

5. Edmund Halley is best remembered for the comet that bears his name. Whilst he surmised that three comet sightings were in fact three sightings of the same comet, he died before his prediction of its reappearance came true. The comet was named for him sixteen years after his death.
